Races Past: August 4th, 1984

Greetings history fans! It's last Saturday night all over again, but in 1984. Vern Deitz went into the august 4th event with a not so commanding point lead over Dave Brandenburg of a mere 13 points, but the evening's spotlight was on Gary Taylor , who set fast time of 19.33, then proceeded to win the A dash, and A main over Jeff Bach and Mick Tomlin. 2nd heat winner Don Graham took the B main, followed by 1st heat victor Leroy Jensen.

On the FEAR newsfront, junior members would be selling raffle tickets for a 650cfm double pump Holley carb until the August 15th general meeting, at which nominations could be made for 1985 officer and board positions. Craig Eakright, Dan Talbert, and Pat Parshall were the new tech committee members, and Sunday, August 19th was set for the 2nd annual "Stock Challenge Cup", open to figure-eight, street and hobby stock cars. In the classifieds, a $600.00 car trailer, a "Sears Best" microwave oven, as well as Ben Chandler's 4th place points ride, a 1969 383 cubic inch 4-speed Plymouth Road Runner were offered for sale. Curiously, Ben's car was offered with trailer-was he going to quit figure-eight racing? Say it wasn't so, Ben! This week's tech tip, courtesy of newsletter author Karen Vogenthaler: to clean your coveralls, soak them for 1 hour in a solution of 3 ounces of borax, 3 ounces of boric acid, and 3 gallons of hot water.
