Profile of a Season: 1986
Look out history fans, it's last
Saturday night all over again, but in 1986! With only one division of
figure-eight cars competing this season, Steve Weldon set the tone for
the night with fast time on the dry track of 19.68 in a '65 Fairlane.
Current point leader Gary Taylor took the A-main in his Camaro, followed
by Tony Crenshaw in his last really big car( a Torino). Jeff Candaux was
third driving a baby-blue '67 Chevelle. First heat winner Ben Chandler
grabbed the b-main spotlight in his factory 4-speed '69 road runner.
Just think how much that body shell alone in pre-race prep condition
would be worth these days! Chasing Ben around the south turn to the
stripe was " monster man" Rick Hager in a very large Monte Carlo, and
Big Ed Ritchie. Ed also won the second heat ahead of Taylor, and the
notorious riverboat gambler Al Hauck. Joe Young Jr. picked up the third
heat victory, followed by Crenshaw and Niel Hamlin. In the newsletter
classifieds, a '64 ford race hauler (worth millions) ,a steal at $2500,
a race ready figure-eight '67 Fairlane for $900, and a '68 GTO prepared
in 1985 with a 400 engine/400 trans for best offer. It's back to 2008!
