“COWBOY” JOHN CARLSON – 2007 SUPER-8 CHAMPION!
By Ben Chandler and Louise Coleman
The 2007 season has ended with the fastest two cars and drivers as Champions in their respective classes. Mike Middleton in the new Stinger-8 Division and John Carlson in the Super-8 Division both dominated the figure-8 track the past two months, consistently setting fast times and winning nearly every week. Both drove well, of course, and each had cars unique to their class. It just may be the official start of the “New Era” in Super-8’s – the first Championship for a purpose-built car since FEAR got started in 1965! “Cowboy” John Carlson, 38, took his first championship in 2003 in an old Camaro. He then traveled to Indiana to buy a Thomas Heck built, 2900 lb. Chevy-powered (de-stroked 400ci) winged rocket-ship! He finally won the 60 minute race in’06, then set a record for the Figure-8 Nationals last month with a 17.131 on his way to that victory, and this Championship! John also started building a home in Clearview, and married his girlfriend Kim just a couple of weeks ago – not a bad summer for the easy-going young dad! The Main event Saturday night started out as “the championship shoot-out” with young Sean Peters just 5 points ahead after the heat races. A brilliant rookie who held the point lead all season, Sean, in the Teel-green #8 Camaro, started near the back of the 16-car field, just ahead of Carlson, when the green flag flew. They both worked toward the front – avoiding spinners, wrecks and smokers. Carlson got by the #8 at lap 7, then lost the spot as Greg Estes tangled with the #01 of Doug Delfel, bringing out a red flag. The #3 of “Bobble-head” Bill Wade restarted behind Delfel and looked strong, as did the #76 of Ricky Dietz. But by lap 17 of the 35-lapper, with Peters unable to restart- and in and out of the pits…it was all “Cowboy” to the end – with donuts and fence-climbing to boot! 2nd place went to Dietz in the #76, followed by the #01 of “the Griz” in 3rd and Wade in 4th. The Rookie-of-the-Year should be young Peters, of course. And congrats to FEAR President John Zaretzke for his NASCAR Superstock Championship! FEAR Banquet location ideas are still needed, contact JZ… and the 500-lap Hornet Enduro is Saturday Evening October 6th. Stinger-8 bumpers are legal, and the race is a TON of FUN! The FEAR Fall meeting is on the 9th of Oct., at Alfy’s in Monroe. Congrats to the 2007 Super-eight Champ “Cowboy” John Carlson who wanted to thank Bryant, Chris and Glenn for their help, and Brock Rentals, My/CAD Co. and Thornberry Autorama for their dough! And thanks for reading my stories each week! A labor of love for the club I joined 35 years ago, made extra special by the new Stinger-8 Division that I got to be a part of this year, exactly 30 years after my favorite season, 1977! A great bunch of young people joined our Club and took part each week, running backwards, into each other… and into Victory lane. We all got to be a part of FEAR’s “new era” history! See you at the Enduros this winter, and at the 2007 FEAR Awards Banquet! BC |

MIKE MIDDLETON…2007 STINGER-8 CHAMPION!
By Ben Chandler and Louise Coleman
The first ever FEAR Stinger-8 Championship has now hit the record book. It was the first “split” Club Championship night I recall in my 35 years at Evergreen, and the VW Scirocco marks the first “non-American” car ever to win that honor in the 42 year history of FEAR! The driver of that red #75, our newest Season Champion, and appropriately enough Saturday night’s A Main winner, is 31-year-old Mike Middleton. During just his second full year of Stinger-8 racing, Mike, a father of 2, spanked all of the Hondas and Toyotas…and last Saturday was no different! With a 19.600 fast time, and the back row starting position, Mike passed all 20 Stingers by lap 19 of the 25-lap Main event. Billie Williams in his new #11 Acura Integra chased Mike all the way, coming in 2nd with the Toyotas of Jake Repin in his #44 taking 3rd over the #17 of young Michael Durbin. Lots of big crashes took out several contenders, including Sean Peters’#8 Civic, and the #22 MRX Totota of Josh Young. Mechanical woes plagued the Preludes of both Josh Beckel and Yours Truly on Saturday. In a battle for the runner-up (1st loser) spot for the season - and “Top Honda” honors, it was the old Wizards #99 that lasted the longest – exactly 30 years after proudly winning the 1977 Stock class Championship, when new Champ Mike (“1 more lap momma”) Middleton was but 1 year old! Congrats Mike, and also to Lane Sundholm, who ended the night by taking the NASCAR Bomber Championship. Lane is the son of long-time Figure-8 racer Leonard Sundholm, who helped create the oval track show that FEAR controlled, and was the 1980 Champion, before NASCAR came to Evergreen. Lane is the brother of ’89 Mini-stock Champ LeAnne and FEAR racer J.R. as well! The ‘07 Mini-Stock Championship title was won by Andy Richard’s son Chuck in his #00 Rabbit. Former FEAR Extreme Contact Champ Josh Beckel won the first Crash Car Championship – in an old hearse, of all things! But the night truly belonged to Mike Middleton, who dominated the new Stinger-8 class towards the end of this season. Truly excited, honored and proud to join the ranks of cool FEAR Champions, he just needs a better “nick-name”! Next week is the Super-8 Championship night, when rookie sensation Sean Peters, with an 11 point lead, will battle the 2003 Champ “Cowboy” John Carlson for the Super-8 title, and FEAR President John Zaretzke will try to hold off Canada’s Shane Harding in the NASCAR Superstock Class. And if the party afterward is anything like Middleton’s celebration, then I’m definitely hanging out for the late night celebration! I would also like to mention that the FEAR bumper has been approved for the Hornet Enduros, and the big 500-lapper is now just three weeks away, on Sat. Oct.6th. October 9 is the next meeting night, and will be held at the Alfie’s Pizza joint in Monroe. And we are seeking a site for the 2007 FEAR Awards banquet; please contact Johnny Z. with suggestions! Thanks for reading my stories all year; I will see you at the track- and in the pits Saturday for our final night of action!. -BC |
